Part 1: Getting Organized

Getting organized is one of the most important and most overwhelming steps to becoming financially free! Many people don’t realize the importance of organization and some are so intimidated by all the paperwork that the step of getting organized is skipped altogether. Don’t fall prey to either of these mindsets. Being organized will save you time, energy and headaches and not just when it comes to finances! Follow these tips toward a clutter-free, easy breezy system.

Keep these records in a Safe Deposit Box or Fireproof Safe:

  • Certificates (birth, death, marriage, divorce, adoption, citizenship)
  • Legal documents such as Wills, Trusts, Contracts, Leases, Titles, and Deeds
  • Professional Licenses, Agreements and Contracts
  • Passports
  • Investment certificates such as bonds and stocks
  • Valuables such as jewelry
  • Tax Records

Keep these records in a Permanent Home File (or scan them into your computer, but note which you should keep originals of):

  • Medical Records
  • Employment Records
  • Automobile Records
  • Bank Accounts
  • Credit Card Records
  • Investments
  • Insurance Records
  • Copies of Legal Records
  • Mortgage Records
  • Retirement Records
  • Receipts

Keep this in an Active Home File (meaning the items you should be looking at regularly or before they go to the permanent file):

  • Monthly Bills
  • Semi-Annual Bills
  • Budget
